You open your watch and start your car

YNP:

In a new step that reflects the acceleration of digital transformation in the automotive industry, technology companies have begun to expand the use of digital keys to include smart watches running on the Android system.

Tech sources recently revealed that owners of compatible cars can now store the digital car key directly on the Android smartwatch, providing them with a higher level of convenience and security.

This innovation allows users to open and start their car, in addition to controlling its various functions, without the need to use a traditional key or even a smartphone.

This development is part of a broader trend that aims to integrate smart technology into our daily lives and make the driving experience easier through innovative digital solutions.

How does it work?

Digital Key technology is based on the combination of an Android smartphone and a compatible smartwatch with Digital Key support. When this feature is configured, the key is stored in the Google Wallet app on the phone or watch, allowing the user to control the car by simply approaching it or placing the device against the key reader inside the car.

This feature provides additional security over traditional keys because it uses Bluetooth and Ultra Wide Band Frequency (UWB) technologies to encrypt the communication between the device and the car, reducing the risk of hacking or cyberattacks common on regular keys.

Configure digital key

First of all, the user must have added the digital key on the Android phone first. It can then transfer the key to the smartwatch during setup or later, as long as the watch is linked to the phone.

The option to add the key to the watch will then appear in the Google Wallet settings and can be easily activated by clicking on the appropriate option.

It is worth noting that the digital key functionality does not depend on cloud storage, but the information is saved securely on the device itself, which improves the level of protection and allows the user to have full control even if the traditional key is lost.

Compatible devices and vehicles

This technology only works with certain newer cars and eligible Android devices. The list includes cars from brands such as Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, Volvo and other companies that support digital key standards.

However, users should check manufacturers’ websites to ensure their models support this feature.

In terms of hardware, some modern Android phones and watches support this feature, including phones from companies like Google, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, and Motorola that run on the latest versions of Android.

Additional benefits and security

The functionality is not only limited to unlocking the doors and starting the engine, but users can also easily cancel or share the digital key with others, making it useful for families or users who share a car.

If you lose your phone or watch, access can be revoked remotely through device management tools. The technology is seen as an important step towards a future without physical keys, making daily life simpler and safer for millions of smart car users around the world.
