US President Donald Trump said on Friday, November 7, 2025, during a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, that he would discuss with Orban the possibility of meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump stressed that he wanted Budapest to remain the location for a possible summit with the Russian president and explained that continued fighting in Ukraine was the reason the summit with Putin had not yet taken place.

Trump added: “Orban and I agree on the possibility of resolving the conflict in Ukraine in the near future,” stressing that he “inherited” the Ukraine conflict from Biden but intends to resolve it.

Trump said: “Orban believes we will end this war in the not too distant future. For his part, Orban said he came to the United States to support the US president’s peace efforts as much as possible and stressed that the Western world made a big mistake several years ago regarding the conflict in Ukraine and that it must be stopped.

“What we Westerners did (the conflict in Ukraine) several years ago was a serious mistake and must stop,” Orban said.

Regarding oil supplies, the US president said on Friday that the United States was studying the possibility of granting Hungary an exemption from sanctions regarding Russian oil supplies.

Trump said at the meeting: “We are studying this issue because it is very difficult for him (Orban) to get oil and gas from other countries. As you know, they (the Hungarians) do not have the advantage of having access to the sea. It is a big country.
