A lawyer was shot dead by a security guard in Al-Turbah town, central Al-Shamaytain district, southern Taiz Governorate, on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
Local sources reported that a dispute broke out between lawyer Abdul Rahman Al-Najashi and judge Hamdan Thabet over water supply pipes, following which the latter surrounded a team from the Shamaytain Police Department.
The sources explained that a police team from the Al-Shamaytain leadership arrived in front of Al-Najashi’s house, near the old Land Court building, accompanied by Judge Thabet, and asked Al-Najashi to accompany them.
She added that Al-Najashi asked them to present the summons sent to him by the prosecution, but they assaulted him by beating him, forcing him to put on the kit, which forced him to take refuge in a nearby store.
The sources reported that one of the security personnel chased Al-Najashi and shot him, which directly injured him.
Al-Najashi was treated on a motorbike at Khalifa Hospital in Al-Turbah, but his injury was fatal.
The incident sparked widespread anger in the town of Al-Turbah, which is witnessing repeated violations by security forces against citizens.
Human rights sources in the city reported that a member of the prosecutor’s office was assigned to immediately and directly investigate the incident.
The sources confirmed that the prosecution prevented the Al-Shamaytain district police from collecting evidence, as some of its members are accused in the case.
The sources expressed fears of falsification of the case, especially since the investigating prosecutor left the scene of the incident hours after the investigation, without recording the surveillance camera footage, considered crucial evidence, and no order was issued to imprison the security personnel who participated with the accused in the Al-Najashi attack.
Sources have confirmed that the killer is still at large and has not been arrested. This raises fears of attempts at illicit trafficking.
