The English edition of Poetry Meets Thought-Provoking Questions by Yemeni writer Hamid Oqabi was recently published by Metoun Al-Muthaqaf Publishing House in Cairo.
The book will be presented at the Cairo International Book Fair 2026 in Hall 1, Stand A50, from January 21 to February 3. This publication represents an important step in my translation journey as it is closely linked to a personal experience working on a critical text that explores complex poetic and intellectual themes.
In this work, Hamid Oqabi examines the poetic experience of the Lebanese German poet Dr. Sarjoun Karam.
It addresses themes deeply linked to human life, such as war, alienation and the search for creative meaning. Oqabi’s analysis is based on a close reading of the poems and the human and cultural contexts that shaped them.
What struck me during the translation process was his clear and direct way of asking questions without unnecessary embellishments and his sincere approach to poetry as a space for reflection and authentic expression.
My experience translating this book was unique. Hamid Oqabi’s language is rich and complex, evolving harmoniously between narration, analysis and observation. It required special attention to convey its nuances in English.
Oqabi is a writer with experience in many artistic fields, including novels, poetry, short fiction, theater and visual arts. These influences are evident in his writing, which often presents multiple perspectives on a single page.
As I translated, I often felt like I was moving through successful scenes and images, working to convey them faithfully to the English reader without losing their meaning or depth.
I consider this translation an important step in my work. I hope it will bring Yemeni and Arabic literature closer to non-Arab readers and provide insight into the issues and ideas that occupy our writers and critics.
I also hope that the book will attract attention at the Cairo International Book Fair as it provides a critical experience that encourages reading, thinking and discussion.
