Mocha Port Director Abdul Malik Al-Sharabi said the port rehabilitation and development project, resulting from the signing of the recent Memorandum of Understanding worth approximately $138 million, will enable the port to operate in accordance with international specifications and specialized technical studies.

Al-Sharabi explained that the project will include increasing the depth of the port located in the west of Taiz Governorate. Up to 12 meters, which will allow it, for the first time, to accommodate large ships with a capacity of around 50 thousand tons, including container ships.

He added that the rehabilitation and development program will be implemented in three stages, starting with the deepening stage as the most important stage to ensure the accommodation of large ships, followed by two stages of expansion and overall development of port infrastructure and facilities.

He stressed that the port serves a large segment of the population due to its connection with the governorates of Taiz, Ibb, Lahj and Hodeidah, hoping that its development will help facilitate the arrival of goods and reduce transportation and shipping costs, in addition to creating employment opportunities and boosting the trade and development movement in Taiz and its surroundings.

Al-Sharabi stressed that the revival of the vital role of Mokha Port aims to serve the public interest and achieve sustainable development, noting that the port administration will start, from next week, receiving traders, shipping agencies and customs brokers, as part of a new work program supported by extensive facilities aimed at strengthening maritime commercial traffic.
