A member of the Supreme Political Council, Lieutenant General Sultan Al-Sami, ordered the Governor of Taiz Governorate, Ahmed Amin Al-Masawa, and the Deputy Director General of the Governorate’s Public Works Office, Abdul Jalil Al-Himyari, to immediately stop work on the project to create a lake to collect wastewater in isolated Al-Jindiyya in the northeastern Al-Taiziyah district of Taiz governorate, and to hold those responsible for this environmental disaster accountable.
The directive follows a widespread wave of popular discontent over the issue of what has become known as the “Lake of Death” in Al-Jindiyya, amid reports that local authorities had begun building an open lake to collect sewage and connecting the sewage networks of Al-Qaeda town in Ibb governorate to this agricultural area, posing a serious threat to the head of the water basin in Rasyan, one of the most important water sources in the district.
The hearing team stressed that the protection of the environment and water resources represents a national priority that cannot be neglected, emphasizing the need to respect environmental laws and standards and not take measures or implement service projects that affect the health of citizens or harm the agricultural sector.
The directive also emphasizes the opening of an urgent and transparent investigation to discover the circumstances of what happened, determine responsibilities and take legal measures against any person whose involvement or negligence is proven, in order to ensure that such practices which threaten public safety do not occur again.
