The great Egyptian director Daoud Abdel Sayed, one of the most prominent Egyptian and Arab filmmakers, has died after a long battle with illness at the age of 78, according to local media.

Dawoud Abdel Sayed suffered from a health problem in recent months and was receiving treatment at home, in addition to weekly dialysis sessions.

Daoud Abdel Sayed, one of the pillars of contemporary Egyptian cinema, was born on November 23, 1946. He graduated from the Higher Institute of Cinema, directing department, in 1967.

Despite his ambitions in the field of journalism early in his career, his passion for cinema pushed him to choose the field of directing, making him one of the most prominent directors who left a distinctive mark in the history of Egyptian and Arab art.

Among his most notable and immortal works are the film “Kit Kat”, one of the icons of Egyptian cinema, “Land of Fear”, “Citizen, Informer and Thief” and “Messages from the Sea”. His last work was the film “Unusual Abilities”, released in 2015, in which he combined writing and directing.

Daoud Abdel Sayed’s works were distinguished by their realistic characters, working-class neighborhoods and familiar streets, which imparted a feeling of intimacy with the viewer, asking existential and moral questions and addressing topics such as social injustice and bureaucracy in a gentle way that linked the viewer to his works and immortalized them in the memory of Arab cinema.

In 2013, three of his films, “Kit Kat” 1991, “Land of Fear” 1999 and “Messages of the Sea” 2010, were selected in the list of 100 most important Arab films published by the Dubai International Film Festival.
