When the day laughs

Zaher Al-Asaad – Palestine

Today
The words fall apart
The letter remains alone
He contemplates himself
Strange in the presence of silence

Damascus
A test of the soul
When she faces her emptiness
You see the void like a mirror
He reveals both his weakness and his strength

A moment
The silence melts there like snow under the tongue of the sun
The streets smell like wet earth
The open roads to its ancient secret

Damascus rises
Dust rising like balls
She finds her features facing the dazed eyes and the faces exhausted by waiting.

It opens a passage to a sanctuary
It’s only complete with human audacity
Faced with his helplessness, he transforms pain into a bridge
From pain to victory

here
Where the letter thirsts but does not quench it
And where feelings burn to light the way
He leaves his oil on the walls
He wakes the stones of the streets from their sleep

Meaning emerges from the ashes that cannot be extinguished by the stillness of the night
Not to say rhymes
Rather, to test that a person is a witness
A moment full of life
And on a country that remains bigger than all the letters

Today
Patience is written on the walls
It remains when the words fall
The soul rises like a city that laughs at the new day

Don’t confuse the question with the lost question
The question is a door, and the lost is an absence of the door

Don’t think patience is giving up
Rather, it is a silent prayer that teaches the heart to tell the time

Be a witness, not a judge
On your wounds
Be a shepherd, not a thief of others’ hope

In every ash there is a seed
And in every silence there is a call
Listen to learn
And be patient to see
And give to keep
