US President Donald Trump announced Thursday October 23, 2025 that he had canceled a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, Hungary, specifying that talks would take place later.
Trump said during his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte: “We canceled the meeting with President Putin. I did not find that appropriate.”
He added: “I didn’t think we would achieve the desired goal. That’s why I canceled it, but we will hold the meeting in the future.”
On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said he would announce his administration’s next steps in the next two days regarding a possible meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“In the next two days, we will inform you of our measures,” Trump told reporters, in response to a question about the meeting with the Russian president.
On the evening of Thursday, October 16, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump had their eighth telephone conversation this year.
After the call, which lasted two and a half hours, Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian president, announced that Moscow and Washington would immediately begin preparations for a new summit between the leaders of the two countries, which could be held in the Hungarian capital, Budapest.
